WATER QUALITY & BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
LFSWS funded a grant to enhance the Salmon in Schools program. The grant provided for the purchase of a new chiller to maintain an appropriate temperature for raising the salmon and also supported other parts of the program. Hartland School 6th grade students raised Atlantic salmon in the classroom, which were released into Salmon Brook in early May. After the release, students took stream water samples to be tested for different water quality parameters and collected benthic macroinvertebrates, which were identified and counted. This program educated students on the importance of the Salmon Brook’s high water quality in the Farmington River watershed, and the students learned about how macroinvertebrates such as mayfly larvae and dragonfly larvae can be used as indicators of water quality.
