Chasing Dragons: A Study of Dragonflies on the Lower Farmington River

Join us for Chasing Dragons: A Study of Dragonflies on the Lower Farmington River on Wednesday, March 11, 7:00 p.m. at Simsbury Public Library.

Beginning in the 1990s, David Wagner of the University of Connecticut and Mike Thomas, then affiliated with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, surveyed dragonflies and damselflies across the state. Their work, along with that of other researchers, is compiled in the University of Connecticut’s Odonate Database. Because dragonflies depend on
clean water and healthy upland habitats, they are important indicators of environmental health. In 2024-2025, Jay Kaplan, Director Emeritus of Roaring Brook Nature Center, undertook a study on dragonfly populations at 15 sites along the lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook, with the objective to assess changes over the past 25-30 years. Join us at the Simsbury Public Library to learn what the study revealed and what the findings suggest about our environment.
