The John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act that was signed into law on Tuesday, March 12, has conferred the status of Wild and Scenic <on the lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook, its tributary.
Attaining the Wild and Scenic designation was a labor of more than a decade by the Wild and Scenic Study Committee constituted by the ten Study towns, Avon, Bloomfield, Burlington, Canton, East Granby, Farmington, Granby, Hartland, Simsbury and Windsor. We were supported throughout by the Farmington River Watershed Association, by the National Park Service, and by our federal representatives, with Senator Murphy and his staff taking the lead.
Our next step will be to organize an advisory management committee to succeed the study committee. Its role will be to create strategies that bring communities together in protecting, enhancing and managing local river resources.
We look forward to working with the towns, the Farmington River Watershed Association and the National Park Service supporting river-related conservation and education projects
