WATER QUALITY & BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
Because Water Quality is one of the outstanding resource values for which the Lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook were designated Wild & Scenic, LFSWS provides funding for the Farmington River Watershed Association (FRWA) to monitor bacteria (E.coli), temperature, and chloride, and perform macroinvertebrate surveys. Additionally, LFSWS provides funding for special research projects including conductivity, nutrients, water level, and cyanobacteria. Forty-one sites are monitored year-round, or during the recreation season. This provides data on a variety of parameters which help determine sources of pollution, habitat suitability for aquatic organisms, and long-term trends in river conditions. This also helps FRWA to plan for needed municipal training, green infrastructure projects, and advocacy efforts to protect and restore the lower Farmington River watershed.
