Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Management

In addition to water chestnut, there are other aquatic invasive plant species in Connecticut including Eurasian watermilfoil, variable leaf milfoil, curly leaf pondweed, watercress and Hydrilla. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station has surveyed lakes and ponds for AIS since 2002.

FRWA requested funding to conduct surveys of AIS in 9 areas along lower Farmington River and in 4 ponds in the lower Farmington River watershed. The purpose was to identify areas needing management and to supplement historical data. Results at river sites yielded native assemblages of duckweed, eelgrass, waterweed and watermeal, as well as trace to sparse invasive populations of curly leaf pondweed, Eurasian watermilfoil and variable leaf watermilfoil. Pond sites have native assemblages of duckweed, watermeal and coontail. Trace amounts of invasive watermilfoil were found at Nod Brook Wildlife Management Area, and there was watercress in the Farmington River Park Pond. No Hydrilla was found, and no new areas of concern were located.
